Sergovic & Carmean, P.A. was founded in December 2007 by John A. Sergovic, Jr., former shareholder and managing partner of Sergovic & Ellis, P.A. and Shannon Carmean Burton, formerly Shannon D. Carmean, former associate attorney at Sergovic & Ellis, P.A. Our firm expanded in number, as well as practice areas, in 2012 when we welcomed David J. Weidman, and amended our firm name to Sergovic, Carmean & Weidman, P.A. In April 2016, Smith McCartney & Owens, LLC, a Delaware law firm, merged into Sergovic, Carmean & Weidman, P.A. As a result of the merger, we welcomed attorneys Deirdre A. McCartney and Shannon R. Owens as well as George B. (“Buck”) Smith, who is of Counsel, and the firm name was changed to Sergovic Carmean Weidman McCartney & Owens, P.A. Harold W.T. Purnell, II, joined our firm in 2018. Tyler Friedman joined the firm in 2022 as a law clerk and in 2023 he was sworn into the Delaware Bar.
We are a Delaware law firm practicing predominantly in the areas of real estate law, civil litigation, land use, estate planning, estate administration, elder law, family law, municipal law, guardianships and business law. It is our objective to provide each client with excellent representation, which is both personal to our client and accommodates their needs and desires at competitive rates. Our commitment to Sussex County and the greater Delaware community is evidenced by its involvement in and support of business and charitable organizations in the local community.
Training, mentoring, continuing education and ethical responsibility are vital to our mission. Our attorneys are very active in local and state legal associations, including, but not limited to, the Delaware Bar Association, Sussex County Bar Association, American Bar Association, Terry-Carey American Inn of Court, Sussex County Women’s Council of Realtors, National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and Delaware Estate Planning Council. Our attorneys are also admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. In addition, we currently serve as agents for First American Title Insurance Company and Old Republic Title Insurance Company and are compliant with ALTA Best Practices.
We have been honored on both the local and state levels. Shannon Carmean Burton was recognized by Delaware Today Magazine as one of Delaware’s Top Lawyers in 2010. In 2011 Shannon C. Burton was recognized by Martindale Hubbel in the Directory of Distinguished Attorneys and was chosen Best Attorney in Sussex County in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 by Coastal Style Magazine Best of Awards. She was also recognized by Metropolitan Magazine in 2021 as the Best Lawyer in Southern Delaware. The Firm was recognized by Coastal Style Magazine as Sussex County, Delaware’s Best Law Firm in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021. The Firm was recognized as the Premier Agent for Old Republic Title in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Shannon R.
